19 dogs rescued from Katy-area home described as a ‘house of horrors’

Authorities rescue 19 malnourished dogs from a “dog house of horrors” in Katy; the animals are now receiving care from the Houston SPCA.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Nineteen dogs were rescued from what authorities are calling a “dog house of horrors” in the Katy area, according to the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office.

The mixed-breed dogs were found malnourished, with several appearing to have mange, officials said. Their living conditions were described as deplorable, with dogs having chewed holes through walls to enter and exit the home, which had standing water, boarded-up windows, and other unsafe conditions.

Deputies with Constable Alan Rosen’s Animal Cruelty Unit, working alongside the Houston SPCA and a Precinct 5 deputy, discovered the animals at a three-bedroom home on Cypress Canyon Drive.

Investigators also found the remains of three other dogs decaying inside the property.

“This was truly a dog house of horrors,” Rosen said. “The scene was deplorable.”

The dogs were rescued on May 15 and are now in the custody of the Houston SPCA, receiving medical treatment and care.

According to officials, the dogs’ owners told investigators they had left the home on May 10. The animals were found five days later.

A hearing to determine whether the owners will be allowed to reclaim the dogs is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at the Harris County Courthouse Annex on North Shepherd Drive.

An ongoing criminal investigation is being reviewed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges will be filed.

Anyone with information or who suspects animal cruelty is encouraged to contact the Houston SPCA at 713-869-7722.
