More than 10 dogs attacked and killed a 15-year-old girl around noon Wednesday at an animal rescue in a Saline County neighborhood, authorities said.
The dogs attacked the girl shortly before 12:15 p.m. while she was in a fenced piece of private property off White Oak Drive that contained about 30 dogs kept by an animal rescue that the girl had been helping with, a news release from the Saline County sheriff’s office states.
On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office declined to publicly identify the dead girl, citing the nature of her death and a desire to show respect for her family, the release states. Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Justin Kirk also declined to name the animal rescue that had been keeping the dogs.
It wasn’t clear Tuesday evening why the dogs attacked, the release states, calling the incident “sudden and tragic.”
Deputies and Benton animal control employees seized the dogs thought to be involved in the attack, the release states. An earlier release stated that there was no danger to the public because the animals were confined.
