The teen entered the roughly 20-foot-deep shaft to try and rescue the family pets, Nevada County firefighters said.
NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — A 15-year-old and two dogs were rescued from an abandoned well Saturday evening in Nevada County.
Firefighters responded to a 911 call just before 7 p.m. to the 13000 block of La Barr Meadows Road and confirmed the teen had entered the roughly 20-foot-deep shaft to try and rescue the family pets, according to the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District (NCCFD).
“Upon assessment, our team determined that the terrain and shaft depth required a vertical rope rescue operation,” said Jason Robitaille, NCCFD’s fire chief, in a news release.
After about an hour of maneuvers, authorities said the teen and both dogs were brought to the surface without serious injury.

The teen was released at the scene, while the dogs were treated for minor dehydration and are expected to make a full recovery, according to the NCCFD.
“This incident is a reminder of the importance of avoiding unsecured structures and calling for help immediately in emergencies,” Robitaille said.
Fire personnel said it urges the public to report any hazardous abandoned shafts to the NCCFD and to never enter confined spaces without proper training and equipment.
The Grass Valley Fire Department reportedly helped with the rescue.
