PIEDMONT, AL – Fourteen dogs were rescued from an abandoned home in Piedmont on Thursday after deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office discovered them while serving an eviction notice. According to officials, the homeowner had vacated the property, leaving the animals behind without food, water, or care.
Authorities confirmed that multiple dogs were in poor physical condition, and some had already died before deputies arrived. Calhoun County Animal Control responded to the scene, removing the surviving dogs to assess their health and provide treatment.

Following the discovery, deputies arrested two individuals, Danny Lane (63) and Penny Lane (60), both of Piedmont, charging them each with 15 counts of second-degree cruelty to animals. Danny Lane remains in jail, while Penny Lane has bonded out. Both had $3,000 bonds for each count.
In a statement, Capt. Falon Hurst of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office made a personal plea for residents to consider adopting from Calhoun County Animal Control. He shared that his own family welcomed a new family member from the County Animal Control just last October, noting they were a great addition to their home.
Authorities continue to urge the public to be responsible pet owners, including spaying or neutering their pets, and ensuring they are not abandoned in similar situations.
