NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — 14 dogs were rescued from inhumane conditions at a property in West Virginia last week by Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a Middle Tenn.-based animal protection nonprofit.
According to an ARC press release, authorities in West Virginia alerted ARC about concerns regarding the group of dogs on a property that had been at the prior week.
When the nonprofit arrived on Thursday, 12 large dogs were found in outdoor pens made out of scrap wire fencing, plywood, and bits of tin roofing. The temperature was freezing and dropping at the time, ahead of the incoming winter storm. All of the dogs were found huddled together to stay warm.
Due to broken-down vehicles near the pen and the pen needing to be cut open to remove the dogs safely, ARC says the undertaking was quite challenging in the cold weather.
The pen was also littered with frozen feces, making the sanitary conditions of this space extremely below par.
Two other dogs were discovered inside the property owner’s home, which had wastewater flowing beneath that ran off to a nearby creek.
ARC was able to rescue all 14 animals that day, but after the group’s vet visit, a range of medical issues were found, including overgrown nails, matting, fur loss, skin inflammation, ear and eye infections, untreated injuries, and internal and external parasites.
ARC plans to provide the proper care and vaccinations to each of these dogs and match each of them to an appropriate shelter or rescue partner, where they will have a chance to find a loving forever home.
