FRESNO, Calif. — Who would dump a big crate filled with over a dozen chihuahuas, including puppies and their moms outside a local animal shelter’s parking lot in this heat?
Fresno Humane Animal Services says some dropped them off in the parking lot on Tuesday.
It says a worker spotted them and needed help bringing them in.

“One of the front desk girls noticed that there was a crate sitting out across the parking lot underneath a tree,” said Angela Morales, a Rescue and Life Savings Coordinator at Fresno Humane.
She says inside the crate was 14 chihuahuas, 3 adult dogs, 2 nursing moms and their puppies.
“When they got out there. They don’t know how long the dogs had been sitting out there, they were panting, they were all hot,” she said.
Although Fresno Humane is overcrowded, it took them in and put most of them in the same kennel to cool off.
Morales shares that it takes a toll on the shelter because they had absolutely 0 kennels for them to go into.

She says people dumping animals has led to the overcrowding, causing a rise in the number of dogs euthanized, because more are coming in than are finding homes.
Unless, members of the community open their homes or other shelters with space can save them.
She explained, “Doing these emergency foster pushes really… trying to get the message out to the community because unfortunately, when we do run out of kennel space, the only answer in that moment when a dog comes through that door is to have to euthanize which is very unfortunate, not only for the dogs, but for our staff who very much care about the animals here.”
Morales says you don’t have to adopt the new puppies and dogs that rolled on Tuesday but by adopting a dog that best fits you, frees up a kennel and makes more space.
