Inside a kennel at the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA), you’ll find a sweet senior dog named Chessie snuggled on a blanket. You wouldn’t know it from her affectionate expression, but Chessie’s life wasn’t always so comfortable.
“At 12-years-old, Chessie was abandoned in a house of horrors,” the PSPCA wrote in a Facebook post.
Earlier this year, the PSPCA’s animal law enforcement team received a tip from a Good Samaritan about a group of animals living in filthy conditions nearby. When rescuers arrived at the scene, the situation proved worse than they could have imagined. The home had no food or water and brimmed with trash. Many animals inside struggled to stay alive. One of them was Chessie.
“At her age, we wondered what her life had been like,” the PSPCA wrote. “How long had she been waiting for help? We were so grateful that the Good Samaritan took the time and care to speak up. They saved her, and we saved her too.”
Accommodating rescuers gave Chessie all the time she needed to adjust to her new life. Eventually, the pup’s true personality began shining through.
“When Chessie arrived at our shelter, it understandably took some time to build her trust,” PSPCA volunteer programs manager Lindsey King told The Dodo. “We are so lucky we did because this girl is goofy, playful and so sweet.”
It wasn’t long before Chessie won everyone’s hearts.
“She’s become a volunteer and staff favorite,” King said.
Now, Chessie needs a permanent home where she can live out her golden years in peace.
“She’s a senior lady, so she’s looking for a home that will play with her but then relax and snuggle,” King said. “Her ideal home would be one that doesn’t have other pets at this time. She’s also looking to live with families who can manage her big, playful size.”
Rescuers are crossing their fingers that this sweet senior girl won’t be waiting much longer to live the life she deserves.
