12 summer pet safety reminders to keep cool, calm, and protected

Temperatures are climbing, and once again it’s time for pet owners to remember the dangers summer can pose to our furry friends. From recognizing heat stroke to swimming pool hazards, here are a few reminders and tips to keep your pets safe all summer long!

  1. Drink lots of water: Like humans, pets need to stay hydrated during the warmer months. Whether inside or out, make sure your pet always has access to fresh water. For extra hydration, consider adding vet-recommended hydration supplements, especially during prolonged outdoor time.
  2. Know the signs of heat stroke: Watch for heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, and unsteady movement. If you notice these symptoms, move your pet to a cool spot immediately, offer water slowly, and use a damp rag to help cool them down. If symptoms persist, get them to a vet right away.
  3. Stay on top of check-ups: Disabled and older pets are more vulnerable to health issues in extreme temperatures. Schedule a vet visit before summer kicks off to review any existing conditions and discuss how to keep your pet safe in the heat.
  4. Invest in a cooling vest: Pet cooling vests help regulate body temperature using water or gel packs and are a great way to keep pets comfortable in warm weather. Talk to your vet to see if this cooling solution is right for your pet.
  5. Groom appropriately: Keep your pet’s coat trimmed to an appropriate length. Too much fur can lead to overheating, while too little can cause sunburn. Not sure what’s best? Ask your vet or groomer for guidance.
  6. Avoid hot, unattended cars: Every summer pets die from being left in unattended vehicles. Never leave your pet alone in the car—even for a few minutes. If they must ride along, make sure someone stays with them, the windows are open, or the air conditioning is running.
  7. Keep your pet away from fireworks: Summer holidays bring fireworks, and for many pets, fear. Loud booms and vibrations can cause anxiety, leading pets to run away or hide. Keep them indoors during fireworks displays and clean up any debris to prevent burns or accidental ingestion.
  8. Limit sidewalk walks: Hot, asphalt pavement can burn your pet’s paws. Instead, look for grassy or shaded areas, and walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
  9. Practice pool safety: While your cat may not be too fond of pools, many dogs enjoy swimming; however, unmonitored pools can lead to accidental drownings. Always supervise pets near water, and if your pet isn’t a strong swimmer, use a life jacket designed for animals. Make sure they do not ingest or swallow pool water.
  10. Secure fences, windows, and doors: Open windows can help cool your home, but they also give pets an easy escape opportunity. Make sure your home is escape-proof, especially during hot weather when getting lost could be dangerous or even fatal.
  11. Limit outdoor time in extreme heat: Try to plan walks and potty breaks during cooler parts of the day. Early mornings and evenings are best.
  12. Know your breed: Flat-faced breeds like pugs, French bulldogs, and Persian cats are more prone to breathing problems, meaning it is important to keep them in cool, well-ventilated environments to prevent overheating.
