Eleven neglected dogs were rescued in Somerset County after they were found abandoned in a Branchburg park late Friday night, officials said.
The Somerset Regional Animal Shelter said the rescue operation began around 1 a.m. Saturday, when an animal control officer assisted by two local police officers and a shelter veterinary technician, captured 10 small dogs in poor condition.
An 11th dog was captured around midnight later that night, officials said.
Shelter officials said the dogs, who appear to have been severely neglected, will require extensive veterinary care, including spaying or neutering, deworming, vaccinations, dental procedures, grooming, and behavioral assessments.
The dogs are not yet available for adoption as evaluations are ongoing.

“With vet costs expected to run into the thousands, monetary donations are most needed and give us the flexibility to respond to the dogs’ needs as they arise,” the shelter said in a statement.
Donations can be made at www.srasnj.org/donate.
The shelter noted that they are currently over capacity and that caring for the newly rescued dogs will put additional strain on resources.
Officials said they are aware of other dogs in similar condition being picked up in nearby towns and warned that more could still be loose in the area.
Anyone with information about where the dogs came from is asked to call the shelter at 908-725-0308.
