FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — Florence County Environmental Control officers, with assistance from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, seized 11 dogs Friday morning from a home in the Tara Village community off of Howe Springs Road in Florence following complaints from neighbors for the past two years, according to officials.
The dogs included one bulldog mixed and 10 shepherd mixed dogs.
Officers said they’ve responded to complaints at the home about the dogs 12 times since March of 2023.

Animal control officers have tried to work with the dogs’ owner to properly contain the animals, but he has not complied, officials said.
Officials say they were able to seize the dogs under Florence County’s public nuisance ordinance.
A section of the ordinance reads:
“Any act of any person, group, or business within the (the owner or offending occupant) unincorporated area of the county which results in accumulation of refuse, debris or abandoned property on premises owned by or under the control of such owner or offending occupant and which may provide a harborage for rodents, vermin, and other pest, depreciate property values of neighboring properties, or constitutes a detriment, danger or hazard to the health, safety and welfare of residents of the county is hereby declared to be a public nuisance.”
A hearing will be held to determine if Florence County Environmental Services had just cause for seizing the dogs and if the owner can get them back, under certain conditions.
Updates will be provided as they become available.
