BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A 1-year-old child has serious injuries after being attacked by a dog in a neighborhood near Converse on Monday, Bexar County Sheriff’s Department said.
First responders were called out just before 10 a.m. to the 9700 block of Spruce Ridge Drive.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said from the scene the 1-year-old child was in the care of a 13-year-old babysitter when the attack happened. There were three dogs, including a “pit bull mix” in the home, and they became aggressive for some reason, Salazar said.
“One of the dogs pulled the baby from the bed and at least one of the other dogs joined in, and they mauled the baby pretty seriously,” Sheriff Salazar said.
Salazar said the 13-year-old tried to intervene, but was also bitten by the dogs.
The toddler was taken directly to BAMC from the home and was expected to be airlifted to University Hospital.
“Unfortunately, we were made aware, while we were here on scene, that this is not the first time something like this has happened. My understanding is that…there has been a dog attack episode at this residence here before. My understanding is that the owner was cited at that time, and…the dogs have actually been deemed dangerous animals,” Salazar said.
The children’s mother, a 36-year-old woman, is currently being questioned, Salazar said. He said there is no word yet whether charges will be applied.
